Borromean Islands trips: exploring the pearls of Lake Maggiore

Lake Maggiore and – in particular – the Borromean Gulf, is internationally celebrated for its landscape, temperate climate and resorts. Stresa, also called the “pearl of Lake Maggiore,” is prized for its gardens, hotels of great tradition, and cultural and convention events. It is located at the foot of Mount Mottarone, a scenic winter sports resort, easily reached by cable car.
The greatest attraction of the gulf, however, is the famous Borromean Islands: Isola Bella, with the noble Borromeo Palace and the Italian-style gardens, created with exuberant Baroque imagination; Isola Madre, beloved for its lush vegetation, rare plants, exotic flowers, peacocks, and free-roaming parrots; Isola dei Pescatori, home to a picturesque village; and finally the islet of San Giovanni, the only one that cannot be visited.

On the opposite shore from Stresa is Pallanza, which, together with Intra, forms the city of Verbania, the largest on the lake and the provincial capital of Verbano Cusio Ossola. In tourist Pallanza stand the extensive and splendid Villa Taranto botanical gardens, rich in thousands of tree species, some very rare, from all over the world.

Aboat trip is definitely the best way to turn your trip to Lake Maggiore into a unique and unforgettable experience-much more than a vacation!

The enchanting Borromean Islands

Mountains, lakes, art, food and wine and friendly hospitality: this is tourism on Lake Maggiore.
Describing the beautiful Borromean Islands, which as if by magic emerge from the waters of Lake Maggiore, is no easy task.

“In Italy there is a large lake, called Lake Maggiore: it is a small sea, the shores of which offer nothing but a wild spectacle. Fifteen miles from the shore, in the middle of the lake are the islands, called Borromee, which are in my opinion the most enchanting place to stay in the world.”
Thus Montesquieu wrote, in one of his essays, as early as 1795.

These are the most apt words to describe this corner of paradise. Words that belong to a distant past, but current more than ever. Wild and enchanting nature that gently embraces visitors and by the hand takes them on a magical journey. Visiting the Borromean Islands on Lake Maggiore is an experience that warms the heart and inflames the soul. It is Mother Nature who reigns over the Borromean Gulf, which has shrewdly escaped the mass tourism of the 1960s and 1970s, avoiding those indescribable concrete flows that devastated other coastlines of Italy’s most renowned tourism regions.

Here, nature has created a masterpiece: a painting in which the perfect shades of color embrace the entire territory, in which with an arrogant but elegant air, wonderful buildings of aristocratic beauty sprout here and there.
Just stop and admire the landscape at sunset: there is nothing more impressive.

What to see on the Borromean Islands: an aristocratic history of tourism and development

Having clarified where the Borromean Islands are located, all that remains is to prepare our eyes and hearts to witness a unique spectacle that is unlikely to be forgotten. That of the islands, which in the Borromean Gulf reign as real gods with non-human features, is a history that embraces the values of the aristocracy of the past, which the Borromeo family literally embedded in this territory, between sea and mountains.

The islands retain the elegant appearance of the 1400s, when the forward-looking plans of family members were beginning to take shape. Each building, of exquisite beauty, has unabashedly defeated the passage of time and today-as in times past-shows bright and elegant. Imagine splendid estates, villas, hotels and parks with historic charm and place them in the midst of the most luxuriant nature. Here, this is what manifests itself to the eyes of the visitor who tiptoes into this fantastic world.

Botanical gardens and small urban realities (such as Stresa) that from intelligent and never intrusive tourism have sucked lifeblood, to turn into priceless Italian wonders.
To all this add a pinch of cordial hospitality: this is the recipe for happiness!
